LMGA Championship Tournament – October 31st & November 1st

The game these two days was individual Stableford where 72 points is “par” for the 2 rounds. The Day 1 match was at Oakridge with fast greens and some difficult pin positions. For Day 2 the match moved to Palmetto with strong breezes and again some very difficult pin positions. The players competed in 6 Flights, arranged by handicap ratings.

The overall Tournament Champion was Peter Quinn in Flight 2 who had rounds of 32/43 for an overall score of 75. Peter was the only golfer to finish better than par and also had the highest single round with a 43 on Palmetto. Way to go Peter!!!

The other Flight winners and their scores were: Flight 1: Mike McGough (38/33-71); Flight 3: Gary Howard (32/34-66); Flight 4: Scott Lauback (31/38-69); Flight 5: Jim Golz (38/33-71); Flight 6: Dave Walradt (39/28-67). It is interesting to note that only about 10% of the rounds were par or better (36 or higher). So, a definite congratulations to Peter and all of the other Flight winners!

Regarding the LMGA POY, there were over 30 players in the hunt for the prize which combines points that folks have earned throughout the year with the points they earn in the Championship Tournament. The overall POY was Jim Golz who rose from 11th Place prior to the tournament to 1st place based on his Flight 5 winning score of 71 where he took first place in the Flight on both days. The POY Runner-up was Rick Cricenti who rose from 9th Place to the Runner-Up position by finishing in 2nd Place in Flight 6. Noteworthy of both Jim and Rick is that this is their first year competing in the LMGA. Congratulations to our two Rookies Jim and Rick on a great 2018!!!

Regarding Skins, there was serious competitions both days with over 35 folks in Net Skins and over 20 in Gross Skins. In Net Skins there were 7 winners on Day 1 and 6 winners on Day 2, all with Eagles. There was only 1 double winner – Bob Kaplan on Day 1; way to go Bob!!! For Gross Skins, there were 8 winners on Day 1 and 3 winners on Day 2, all Birdies and all single winners. We had one Gross Eagle on Day 1 (Larry Brown with a hole-in-one) but he didn’t enter the Gross Skins Pool (shame on you Larry!). But more about this in another post. So, congratulations to all our Skins winners.

And a special thanks to our Beverage-Master Tom Siepel who once again ensured that there were ice-cold beverages at the 19th hole on both days.

As a reminder, our next Thirsty Thursday event will be next Thursday November 8th at Magnolia. The game will be 4-man teams who are required to take 1 or more net balls on odd holes and exactly 2 net balls on even holes. Sign up soonest so that you don’t miss out on the fun.

And don’t forget, the BA Cup Championship Tournament will be held on Nov 14th & 15th. As usual, a cookout and beverages will follow at the 19th hole on both days. LMGA Members can sign up for one or both days and should register soonest.
