Summerlike temperatures made for a perfect golf day in the final week of February, with mixed teams of A-B and C-D handicaps competing. Flight 1 matches ended in close wins, with first place going to Tom Richards, Mike Peebles, Jim Yablecki and Ken May with 133 points. Right behind them with 131 points were Tom Stephens, David Foley, Dave Johnson and Mike Morris, followed by the team of Sonny Brownlee, Kevin Brandon, Sean Ryan and John Soron with 130 points.
Flight 2 winners had a greater spread. In first place with 149 points were a threesome composed of Don McVay, Bruce Gabbitas and Jeff Lamson. The team of Bud Equi, David Evans, Dave Martin and John Landuyt finished second with 144 points. In third place with 139 points were Bob Benson, Tom Kunce, Bret Hardy and Tom Collins.
A number of competitors had reason to be happy with their play. On his second swing of the day, Rick Colvin chipped in from beyond the bunker on the par 3 12th hole. From off the green, Dave Resler putted a 30-footer into the cup for his birdie, and Steve Voss putted in from 40 feet for a net eagle worth a skin. Steve also roped a tee shot on another par three to within inches of the hole—a near miss for both a hole in one and a skin, but a birdie nonetheless.
At the end of the round a half-dozen skins were shared among Ed O’Donnell, Tom Hickey, John Landuyt, Steve Voss, Mike Towson and Steve O’Loughlin.
MEMBERSHIP NOTES
John and Mary Robinson wasted no time getting into the swing of golf at The Landings. They bought their house the last week of February—and John signed up for LMGA the day before the deal closed. Both John and Mary are avid golfers, having lived and been club members in several areas of the U.S., from their home state of New Jersey to Arizona. In fact, they moved here from a retirement home in Florida, preferring the charm of Savannah to the “crazy” of Orlando. While they renovate their new home in The Landings they plan to shuttle back and forth from New Jersey and return weekly so that both can play with the friends they’ve already made here.
