A-B Players scramble to win from Tournament tees

Scrambles usually make it easier for teams to score, but even lower-handicap players can struggle when the tee box options are set way back. Some of the Flight 1 A-B teams – those without long-ball strikers – faced a challenge on Deer Creek this week when choosing among “Pick Six” Skidaway, Club and, especially, Tournament tees. But it didn’t keep any of the teams from posting respectable scores. The same was true for the Flight 2 B-C teams, which played from a combination of Skidaway, Metal and Club tees. Scores for both Flights ranged from a low of 58 to a high of 69.

Winning team scores were closely contested in both Flights, with a tie in Flight 1 decided by a card-off. The Flight 1 winners with a low score of 58 were Edgar Yu, Bob Clement, Sonny Brownlee and Jon Bokina. Also scoring 58 (but edged out) were Greg Snyder, Rick Colvin, Pete Quinn and Jack Welch. In a close 3rd place with 59 points were Tom Hickey, Jeff Sibley, Doug Ramey and Ron Thomas.

Despite the tie loss, the team of Colvin, Snyder, Quinn, and Welch played a stellar game, eagling the par five 3rd and par four 9th holes thanks to sharpshooting by Greg Snyder, who nailed an iron shot from 130 yards to 6 feet from the pin on hole 3, and on hole 9 put a 230-yard drive from the Skidaway tee to within a similar few feet from the flagstick. The team was 8-under on the front nine and 6-under on the back nine, while their competitors were 7-under on the front and the back to claim the win.

In Flight 2, the winning team with 59 points included Keith Brown, John Evans, Sean Ryan and Michael Kattman. Second place with 61 went to Mike Allen, Scott Happ, Bob Jannino and David Evans. In third place with 62 were Andy Eastwood, Buck Buckner, Ted Bumsted and Phil Redmond.

INTERCLUB REPORT - SEASON FINAL

The final Hilton Head Interclub League match was hosted at our Deer Creek course.  As the host club, The Landings did not field a team as they had already played ten matches while all others competed in only nine.  Going into the final, our team was leading in all measurable metrics but could only watch and wait for the final results.

Unfortunately, our lead did not withstand the play by the Moss Creek team. Needing 52 ½ points to tie, Moss Creek rose to the challenge and crushed the Country Club of Hilton Head team with a 57-33 triumph.  Moss Creek won all 5 of their matches scoring the highest team point total in any match this season. They earned a tip of the hat from all.

Congratulations to all the Landings players for their fine season, 2nd place final standing and valiant effort to retain the trophy.  Our team won 9 of their 10 matches and amassed 484 points this season (3 ½ points more than last year’s win). It was a tight, competitive race all around, and lots of fun! – Steve Bunn, Captain / Rich Matos, Co-Captain
