LMGA Thursday play continued with the 8th B-A Cup match of the year. Play continued using the Club and LMGA Corona Virus social distancing rules. Individual Foursome tee times, and special scorecard and beverage handling procedures at the 19th hole were again the order of the day. And food service continued using special precautions to ensure social distancing rules remained enforced.
The game this week was individual match play. First place Deer Creek competed against last place Marshwood while 2nd place Palmetto went against 3rd place Oakridge. Both contests were blowouts. First place Deer Creek overpowered Marshwood by a score of 10.5 to 7.5. The Oakridge – Palmetto match was even more lopsided with Oakridge beating Palmetto by a score of 14.5 to 8.5. In this match, Oakridge’s Tony Berens and Herb Gallagher had to play against two Palmetto opponents with each player winning both of their matches to earn Oakridge 2 points each. Way to go Tony and Herb. And there were no overflow players who exceeded their Stableford goal of 32 to tip the scales for any of the teams.
The 19th hole was especially sweet due to the continuation of food to supplement our weekly beverages. Grilled chicken and hot dogs were the order of the day with the Palmetto staff doing a commendable job of taking care of us while ensuring that all Corona Virus protocols were followed. A great big “thank you” to the Staff and a SHOUT OUT for a job well done.
As always, a special thanks goes to the LMGA folks who made this event a huge success while ensuring everyone stayed safe and followed all the Corona Virus guidelines. Thank you, President Frank Schepis, for overall organization and serving as our bartender; Tom Seipel and Steve Voss for handling our beverages; and John Bellucci, Steve Skipper, and Mike Munro for continuing to keep us organized despite many last-minute changes. Also, kudos to injured reserve Bill Tomassini for lending a hand.
So, the 2020 B-A Cup season continues. With its win, Deer Creek extended its first-place lead with a total of 6 points over the 2nd place team Palmetto who remained at 4.5 points with its loss. Third place Oakridge with 4 points closed the gap between 2nd and 3rd places with its win while Marshwood’s loss cemented its hold on last place with 1.5 points.
Next month on September 17th we play the final Thursday B-A match of the 2020 season which will determine the seedings for the 3-day B-A Cup tournament in October. First place Deer Creek will play 3rd place Oakridge while 2nd place Palmetto will play last place Marshwood. The game will be 4-Ball where 2-man teams will select one net best ball on every hole. Sign up now so that you don’t get left out.
And while you are signing up, don’t forget about signing up for next week’s play at Oakridge. The game will be the crowd favorite Pick-6 Scramble where each team must select six tees from three different teeing grounds. A-B teams will select six tees each from Tournament, Club, and Course Named tees while C-D teams will select six tees from Club, Medal, and Skidaway tees. And given the new normal, social distancing will be the word and the practice of the day, both on the first 18 holes and at the 19th hole.
