Close contests lead to close wins in LMGA play

The winning team in the AB Flight, composed of John Bellucci, David Foley, Rob Jackson and Dale Johnson, started slowly and was only 1 under par after seven holes--then got hot, shooting 11 under for the next 11 holes. They also notched an eagle when Jackson hit a wedge to 4 feet on the 18th hole despite a team-best drive that was inside the hazard line, 110 yards out from the flag.

The team won the flight in a card-off against Tom Hickey, Steve O'Loughlin, Greg Snyder and Bill Tomassini, who also finished at 12-under. Hickey sank a 15-footer for eagle on the par 5 sixth hole and Tomassini sank a long eagle putt on 14 and followed that up with lengthy putts for birdies on 16 and 17. O'Loughlin sank 30-footers for birdies on the 11th and 12th holes.

In third place was the team of Bobby Balmes, Ken May, Doug Ramey and Jack Welch. They eagled three of the four par 5s--holes 3, 14 and 18, and birdied number 6.

The second (CD) Flight saw Don McVay, Mark Witbeck and Scott Happ score 10-under to narrowly beat the two closest teams, which included Sean Ryan, Bud Equi, Keith Brown and Phil Libby, who tied at 9-under against Maurice Green, Bob Gardner and Milo Moore.

Mike Allen, who teamed with Don Snyder, Gef Fleming and Bill Delaney, almost holed out on the par 3 hole 12, hitting his tee shot to within six inches.

Membership Notes

Robert and Christine Burch moved to The Landings six months ago after a friend invited them to visit, then returned for a Discovery stay with family members and decided to make their new home here when "everybody gave it thumbs-up," says Rob. Now retired from a 40-year career in the bakery business in Chicago, Rob enjoys that he has more time to golf than when he worked in a 7-days-a-week occupation. His favorite golf memory? When you meet him, ask him to tell you his "cut that in half" story -- it's incredible!

Interclub Results

Playing in challenging windy conditions, The Landings team proved their mettle with a 49.5 - 40.5 win over contending Sea Pines at the seventh Interclub match January 25 at Dolphin Head Golf Club. On our #1 team, Dave Panitch held the match close on the front nine until Billy Brunton found his form to move them ahead with with an 11-7 victory. Rich Matos and Bre John Landuyt when he hit the ball stiff to the pin from a penalty area.t Hardy fought hard but yielded to opponents that both played better than their handicaps. Teams of John Landuyt & Keith Krueger and Charlie Ryan & Bryan Morton both notched solid 11-7 wins. John Bellucci and Ken Aaron at one point were 3 points down but battled back for the 9 1/2 to 8 1/2 victory. The shot of the day was made by John Landuyt when he hit the ball stiff to the pin from a penalty area.

Our team continues to battle for the top spot. Palmetto Hall, last week's leader, split their match 45-45, allowing The Landings team to regain the lead with a razor-thin 3 1/2 points. It's still a tight race and we're hanging in there.
