Deer Creek Maintains Lead over Palmetto in BA Cup Standings

Despite a relatively low turnout, spirited play on a cool but brilliant morning across the recently renovated Palmetto course resulted in back-to-back wins for both Team Deer Creek and Team Palmetto in the season-long Bouchillon-Ambrose Cup competition.

Front-runner Deer Creek now leads 4 wins to Palmetto’s 3 wins, while Team Marshwood maintains its hold on third place with just 1 win. With four rounds completed, Team Oakridge is still battling to climb into the standings with zero wins so far.

Landings Club pros Chris Leake and Lacy Skwarek pitched in to help the competitors, but despite a match win by Leake and John Higgins for Oakridge against Skwarek and Mike Towson for Deer Creek, the Oakridge team fell to DC 2-4. Meanwhile, Team Palmetto barely edged out Marshwood 4 ½ to 4.

Golf Chairman Phil Redmond said weekly LMGA play attendance has been somewhat lower in general this year, but this competition round’s Modified Alternate Shot format could have helped to keep turnout light. “Players like to play their own ball,” he said, noting that organizers would consider whether to keep the format in the rotation for future matches. The unusually cold and wet spring weather also could have been a factor, he added — the previous week’s April 11 match had to be canceled altogether due to heavy rains.
