Deer Creek Takes BA Cup in a Narrow Win Over Marshwood

The victorious Deer Creek team celebrates its victory.

By Rick Colvin

In a dramatic come-from-behind finish on the Palmetto Course October 14, the Deer Creek team squeezed out a win in singles matches in the final round of playoffs to claim ownership of the 2021 Bouchillon-Ambrose Cup.

Deer Creek had led the yearlong competition going into the three playoff rounds and maintained a lead after the first round. But after a weak team showing in the alternate-shot format in the second round, held October 13, Deer Creek fell behind the Marshwood team, which had 17 points to Deer Creek’s 16.1.

Marshwood maintained its lead through the first 19 singles matches of the final round, winning 11, losing five, and tying three. With a growing crowd of players closely watching as the individual match results were posted on the Oakridge veranda, Deer Creek evened the score and then moved ahead, winning nine of its last 10 matches. Deer Creek won with 30 points over the three days of playoffs. Marshwood finished with 28.9 points. Palmetto wound up with 21.5 points and Oakridge scored 19.7.

Thanks to the golf staffs at the Marshwood, Palmetto, and Oakridge courses, which hosted the playoffs.

Membership Notes

New LMGA member Chris Means and his wife, Ella, moved to The Landings from Atlanta in April. Chris is a life, disability, and long-term care insurance broker, with offices in Atlanta and Savannah.

Chris cherishes two golf memories. He had a double eagle at the Cullasaja Club in Highlands, North Carolina, using a borrowed three wood on a par five. His second golf memory is of the day his youngest son, who began playing the game at the age of 14, learned he’d been awarded a golf scholarship to play Division 1 collegiate golf.

Chris and Stacie Perry will live at The Landings during the winter and spring but their main residence will remain Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, where Chris and Stacie work together in his residential contracting business.

One of his favorite golf memories is of a trip with his father and two brothers to play four courses that had hosted The Open, including St. Andrews and Carnoustie. Chris remembers arriving early in the morning after the trans-Atlantic trip, heading out to the first tee at St. Andrews and shooting a birdie.  He has a photo of him, his father, and his brother on the famous St. Andrews bridge, which brings him back to what was a glorious day.

Tom and Lesa Thompson moved to The Landings from northern Virginia in April of 2019. Tom was a career Army officer and then worked for a defense contractor. Lesa is a retired middle school teacher. Tom’s favorite golf memory is of a hole-in-one with a 9-iron on a 139-yard par 3 at the Bristow Manor Golf Course in Manassas, Virginia.
