Summerlike weather greeted LMGA golfers this week on the Magnolia course, where a game of 1-plus on Odd holes and 2 (only) on Even holes resulted in six closely matched winners.
In Flight 1, a top score of 18 points against par was carded by Greg Snyder, Brian Ray, John Bellucci and Michael Peebles. In second with 16 points were Rob Clement, Ed O’Donnell, Randy Choat and Keith Brown. Third place with 15 points went to David Johnson, Jeff Lamsom, Jim Higbee and Bob Banuski.
The Flight 2 winners with 21 points were foursome John Garone, Ted Bumsted, Ed Suleski and Bob Kaplan. In close second with 20 points were Pete Quinn, James Headley, Bud Equi and Dan Malachuk. Right behind in third place with 19 points were David Foley, Mike Towson, Mark Witbeck and Tony Marino.
There were high and low moments among several contestants. Chuck Moore birdied for net eagle on his first hole of the day, as did Tom Richards, who captured his on hole 5 with a 15-foot putt. But Tom hit a low point on the next hole, putting two balls in the water – the first to the left off the tee, the second into a right-side lagoon with a fairway wood. Gef Fleming’s “trick shot of the day” happened on hole 1 when he skulled his ball into a sand trap, only to see the ball carom off a rake and onto the green, enabling him to make par.
At the end of the match, eagle skins were awarded to six players: Bob Hainly, Randy Choat, Davis Foley, Brian Ray, John Garone and Tom Richards.
INTERCLUB RESULTS
Our Landings Interclub team triumphed with a 48-42 win over Port Royal at Palmetto Hall’s Arthur Hills course on Wednesday, Feb. 8. Highlighted by Bob Meikle’s birdie chip-in, he and Bob Hainly demonstrated the art of four-ball with a strong 12-6 victory to lead the team. Solid play by teams Scott Stockslager/Bill McCloskey and Bill Brunton/Rick Saunders both produced 10-9 successes. Rich Matos and Brian Harkleroad fought hard for a 9-9 tie. Although the team of John Bellucci and Ken Ura didn’t quite fare as well, John did earn comeback honors winning three of the last four holes.
The Palmetto Hall team was idle as they hosted the match. Our Landings team remains atop the standings, but the race remains very tight with Palmetto Hall, Sea Pines and Moss Creek all within a few points. Our fate is in our hands as we match up against the second-place team, Palmetto Hills next week at the Country Club of Hilton Head.
