InterClub Competition
The Landings team made a strong move up the standings in its last two Interclub matches.
On Feb. 24, the team beat Arthur Hills 47-43 at the Country Club of Hilton Head. Leading the charge was Eric Gilster and Paul Warhola, who gave their Arthur Hills opponents a 13-5 thumping. Greg Maloof and Bob Wyont also made a strong showing, winning their match 10 ½ to 7 ½. In that match, Maloof won a hole with a birdie on a par 5 after hitting the green in two. Steve Bunn and Andy Eastwood were down 4 holes but clawed their way back to win 9 ½ to 8 ½, after Eastwood made a clutch putt on the 18th.
In the team’s next to last match of the season, the Landings team won or tied all five of its matches to beat Palmetto Hall Feb. 28 50-40, putting the team in second, only 5 ½ points out of first.
Low-handicappers Paul Lieberman and Tim McDermott beat their opponents 11-7, thanks to four birdies by McDermott. Mike McGough and Greg Snyder won their match 10-8 and Peter Quinn and Edgar Yu won 10 ½ to 7 ½. John Bellucci and Bob Hainly were down by 2 ½ points with three to play but battled back to halve the match 9-9. Gary Poleynard and Ken Ura were down by 4 holes after 7 holes but fought back to win 9 ½ to 8 ½.
