Late-Season Surge Puts Marshwood in 1st Place in 2024 B-A Cup Tournament

By Rick Colvin

With only one championship round left, the Marshwood Bouchillon-Ambrose Cup team finds itself narrowly in first place after a late-season surge on the Deer Creek course Oct. 10 in Landings Men’s Golf Association competition.

The Marshwood team entered the championship round-robin tournament in 3rd place, 4 points behind Deer Creek and only ½ point back of Palmetto. Oakridge trailed.

On Oct. 9, in alternate shot competition on the Oakridge course, Oakridge tied Deer Creek, with each team earning 5 points. Meanwhile, Palmetto bested Marshwood, 5.6 points to 4.4 points.

That left Deer Creek still in 1st place with 12.5 points, Palmetto in 2nd with 10.1, Marshwood in 3rd with 8.4 and Oakridge with 7.

The next day, Marshwood dominated Deer Creek in four-ball play, winning 7 matches to only 1 match for Deer Creek. That lopsided victory put Marshwood in the lead, only .9 points ahead. Oakridge also made a charge, closing only .6 points back of Palmetto. Only 2.05 points separates Marshwood at the top of the standings from Oakridge, which remains in 4th place, but far closer to the top than at the beginning of the three-round championship finals.

All four teams will compete in singles matches on Oct. 31 on the Magnolia course, with 20 points at stake, promising another exciting final to the B-A Cup.

(The reason for the fractional points is that, regardless of the number of actual matches, 10 points were available for each of the first two rounds and 20 points available in the final round.)

A look ahead: the LMGA individual Championship to determine the 2024 Player of the Year is scheduled for Nov. 13 and 14. Sign up for those rounds is available through the LMGA website.
