LMGA Members Support First Tee With Generous Donations

By Rick Colvin

Dozens of LMGA members on September 16 donated hundreds of clubs, many bags of balls, and plenty of golf bags as well as golf attire to the revived local First Tee organization. The equipment will be used to help the 85 students ages 3 through 16 who are currently participating in First Tee activities at five Savannah-area golf courses.

“We want to offer our sincere gratitude for the donations,” said First Tee Executive Director Ben Robbins. “Your donations keep our chapter running and will find their way into the hands of children throughout Savannah.”

First Tee in Savannah was restarted earlier this year. The goal of the organization is to introduce young people to the game as well as develop nine character traits important on the course as well as in life: honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy, and judgement.

First Tee sponsors activities at the golf courses and also works with in-school and after-school programs. First Tee in Savannah has given bags of plastic clubs, tennis balls, cones, and other equipment, as well as lesson plans to introduce students at 13 area schools to golf through fun activities. First Tee staff and volunteers provide training and support to teachers and other adults who work with children. First Tee also partners with The Boys and Girls Club, Park Place Outreach, Girls on the Run, and other non-profits to help them introduce the game to the children they serve.
