The last day of play in the three-day 2023 Bouchillon-Ambrose Championship series turned into a nail-biting finish for season leader Team Palmetto, as their former third-place rival mounted a heroic comeback challenge to close within 3.5 points at the final score tally. However, Palmetto never relinquished the series leadership, hanging on to their victory with 32.5 points against Deer Creek’s 29 points.
Team Marshwood, meanwhile, fared less well, falling from second to third place in the final with just 7.6 match points for the day, while the last-place Oakridge team solidified its season-long losing streak with a meager 7 points total.
With a potential 20 points on the line at the start, Deer Creek actually won the day with 14.5 points to Palmetto’s 12.9 points. The contest, which began under sunny but unseasonably chilly skies on an absolutely pristine Marshwood course, elevated Deer Creek from its third-place standing to close nearly tied for first. Altogether, 76 LMGA members filled the fairways and greens to compete for the Championship.
“It wasn’t a slam-dunk,” LMGA Chairman Phil Redmond said afterward of Palmetto’s narrow victory. “Deer Creek gave them a real run for the money.” Team Palmetto Captain Scott Happ added that he was just happy the team held on for the win. “I just told them to go out and have fun. The team played well.”
