Team Stableford Winners Tally High Scores on Deer Creek

By Rick Colvin

The team of Jeff Baker, Randy Choat, and Dan Malachuk tallied a remarkable 144 Stableford points Dec. 6 on the Deer Creek course to win the 1st Flight.

How remarkable is it? Well, because they were playing as a threesome against foursomes, the team takes its actual score of 108 and multiplies it by 1.33 to derive its final score. That means that the team had to score the equivalent of 36 net birdies, or 12 for each player, because in Stableford scoring each birdie is worth three points.

As good as the winning team's score was, the team of Tony Lombard, Charles Murphy, and Eric Rosenstock came in only one point behind with 143—also a great score. Third place was claimed by Bill Jaques, Bob Kaplan, Greg Snyder, and Paul Warhola with 136.

In the 2nd Flight, the team of David Evans, Randy Hatch, Ron Thomas, and Don Snyder came in 1st with 136 points. The team started fast, racking up 10 points on the difficult dogleg left hole No. 7, the first it played. The team added another 10 on the par 3 8th. They did well on the back 9, scoring 62 points, but took off again when they came around to No. 1, tallying 9, 7, 8, 7, 8 and 9 points respectively on the first six holes. “All members of the foursome contributed fairly equally,” Randy Hatch said. “When one or two were down, the others stepped in.”

In second place with 135 points was the team of Larry Batanian, Gary Mehes, Tom Stephens, and Bill Wolod; in third was the team of Ted Bumsted, Craig Flynn, David Martin, and Peter Hering with 128 points.

Skins: Paul D’Angio (No. 4), Larry Batanian (No. 6), and Dave Angell (No. 8).

Membership Notes

New LMGA member Michael Peebles moved to The Landings from Whitemarsh Island. Michael was president and CEO of Paper Chemical Supply Company, a family owned and operated Savannah company that provides janitorial and sanitizing equipment to businesses along the East Coast up to Charleston, S.C. Michael retired after selling the company. He started playing golf in his thirties and said he has grown to love the game.

New LMGA member Michael Fischer and his wife, Jan Lawrenz, moved to The Landings from Milwaukee, where he was a lawyer until he retired. But he grew up in Kentucky and says he’s a “Kentuckian at heart.” He says he has yet to get golf down (we can all relate, of course) but he hasn’t given up. Michael’s first golf memory is being given hand-me-down clubs from his grandfather when he was 5 or 6 years old. “Wooden shafts. Leather grips. Possibly a niblick and a spoon. We made a golf course on a vacant lot in our neighborhood and the rest is history!”
