Jon Bokina had an all-time career best round of 73 on the Deer Creek course Aug. 28, which translated to 43 Stableford points, putting him atop the 1st Flight by five points over 2nd-place Jim Yablecki.
Stableford is a “net” game, so players get points for their scores after applying their handicaps, with a bogey worth 1 point, a par, 2 points, a birdie 3, and an eagle 4. Bokina birdied holes 1 and 2 by sinking 5-foot putts. He also birdied nine and 14. Demonstrating that Thursday’s round was no accident, Bokina shot a 74 two days later on Oakridge.
“I’ve been playing since I was a kid and last week was very special,” Bokina said. “I’m really feeling it right now.” Bokina’s two rounds dropped his handicap index from 8.4 to 6.7.
Other flight winners were: John Bellucci, 2nd flight; Mark Witbeck, 3rd flight, and John Evans, 4th flight.
Bellucci chipped in for a birdie on the 14th hole from the lagoon bank in front of the greenside trap on his way to scoring 41 points; Thomas Stephens, Phil Redmond, and Warren Lewis all scored 33 points, however, a card comparison put Stephens in 2nd, Redmond in 3rd, and Lewis in 4th.
Witbeck started his round with birdies on the 11th and 12th holes and racked up 40 points. William Delaney followed with 35 for 2nd place; Mike Schmidt with 33 for 3rd and Kennith Ritz 4th with 32 points.
Evans finished his round with net birdies on the 12th and 13th holes, coming in with 39 points. Michael Allen came in second with 37, Don Snyder had 36 for 3rd place, and David Evans earned a 4th with 36 points.
