Tight Races Highlight Two-Man Scrambles

Play date: Sept. 5 – A field of two-man teams scrambled to multiple – and statistically unlikely – winning ties this week on the Palmetto course. Three teams in each of the first and second flights carded identical net scores of 68 (Flight 1) and 69 (Flight 2).

In Flight 1, Bill Ansley sank a 12-foot putt on the par 3 fifth hole on for his team’s win. He and partner Jeff Nibley were declared the victors by way of a card-off over the teams of Jon Bokina and Rick Colvin, and Jack Welch and Pat Toner, both of which also scored net 68s. Bokina and Colvin each missed a 5-foot birdie putt on their last hole, the par 3 fifth hole, that would have garnered their win — proving again that putting often makes the difference in scrambles.

In Flight 2, three teams also finished tied for first place with matching scores of net 69. In this case, Jim Ulmer and Brad Battista earned their victory in a card-off. The pair beat second-place finishers Brian Piening and Ken Ritz, and John Higgins and Frank Cervino in third place.

Buck Buckner and David Evans won Flight 3 outright with a net score of 70. They beat the second-place team of Jim Graham and Dale Johnson, and Michael Allen and Mike Staman, who finished third.
