February’s first LMGA match, on the first of the month, ended with near-matching scores for the two high- and low-handicap Flights in a closely contested round on the Oakridge course. Altogether, 15 foursomes and two threesomes—66 golfers altogether—teed off on a sunny and relatively mild day for mid-winter Savannah.
The game, Team Stableford, with awards for winners in Front and Back nine holes, plus points for Overall scores, ended in nearly equal finishing totals. Both Flight leaders scored 135 to capture the Overall win, while second-place runners-up were within just two points of each other.
In Flight 1, the team of Rick Colvin, Ed O’Donnell, Dave Johnson and Jeff Nibley led the pack with their Overall 135 points. A threesome of Scott Ireland, Grant Buchanan and David Foley won the Front with 71 points. Back nine winners with 67 points were James Headley, David Montague, Jim Polewaczyk and Bob Schmidt.
Flight 2 leaders for the Overall included Scott Happ, Sophus Schanche, Dale Johnson and Don Snyder. In with a Front nine total of 73 points were Mike Allen, Maged Khalil, Randy Choat and Brian Piening. The foursome of Michael Peebles, Ken Ritz, Jim Rogan and Bill Delaney took the Back nine with 59 points.
The mild weather seemed to agree with 13 of the players who captured a grand total of nine eagles and four birdies during the round. Eagle skins went to Phil Redmond, Bill Tomassini, Ed Suleski, Scott Happ, Eddie Ambrose, David Foley, Steve Thomas, Mike Allen and Bob Banuski. Birdie skins were awarded to Jeff Nibley, Rich Matos, Bret Hardy and Grant Buchanan.
