A springlike morning fog blanketed the fairways when players teed off this past week for a ”Pick Six” scramble, but within a few holes played the sun was out for an unseasonably warm January day. The recently renovated Palmetto course, still restricted to CPO (cart path only) play, even looked like summer due to the lush growth on its recently overseeded fairways and greens.
Although scramble scores don’t count toward player handicaps, David Foley nevertheless could count the natural (gross) eagle he scored when he put his third shot from the fairway into the cup on the long par 5 second hole. That feat helped his foursome—with Bill Tomassini, Doug Ramey and Jim Polwaczyk—score a low of 61 after 18 holes, but it still wasn’t good enough to rank among the day’s winners. First place in Flight 1 with 60 went to Larry Batanian, Brad Battista, Sam Story and Jon Bokina. The team of Scott Ireland, Rick Colvin, John Bellucci and Dave Martin also scored 60 but were relegated to second place by a card-off. In for third place with 61 (another card match) were Greg Snyder, Jeff Nibley, Tom Young and Tim Leisman.
In Flight 2, a score of 64 was good enough to place first for Pat Dalbey, Mark Witbeck, Mike Allen and Randy Gladden. In second place with 66 were Keith Brown, Dale Johnson, Dan Jackson and Bob Schmidt. The team of Rick Cricenti, David Evans, Phil Libby and Robert “Rib” Rubin placed third with a 67.
